People follow #committed leaders.

“People do not follow uncommitted leaders. Commitment can be displayed in a full range of matters to include the work hours you choose to maintain, how you work to improve your abilities, or what you do for your fellow workers at personal sacrifice” – Stephen Gregg

I was chatting with a film maker who had recently completed a documentary in one of the harsh winter environments. The struggles he had gone through was crazy! And to top it, it wasn’t even something he set out to do, but once he visualised the value of what he could create, he was sold.

Normal people would have quit. I asked him, “What made you complete this despite the many odds and obstacles?”

He looked at me with a glimmer in his eyes and said, “Commitment” then continued, “Something I learnt from someone I admire – Michelangelo”

Do you know Michelangelo?

At 21, he sculpted his first masterpiece. And even before 30, he had already become a brand having sculpted David and others!

A sculptor was how he saw himself and how others saw him. That was his USP!

Now when the Pope called him to Rome to sculpt a magnificent tomb, he went readily but something else awaited him. He was shown the ceiling of a small chapel in Vatican and asked to paint it.

Now he could have refused but as he looked at the ceiling, he could visualise and he saw an opportunity to passionately create something impossible.

And then he committed to it!

For 4 gruelling years, he painted painstakingly 400 figures and 9 scenes from the Bible, all while lying on his back on makeshift structures. Paint fell into his eyes, his hands ached, his body groaned but the commitment to the vision kept him going.

The Sistine chapel ceiling became a masterpiece and influenced art and painting in a big way.

Once, when he was meticulously painting a dark corner of the chapel which most people may not even notice, he was asked, “Why are you working with so much commitment amidst the hardships in a spot that no one may ever see?”

Michelangelo replied, “God will see”.

Michelangelo not only inspired many with his sculpture and art but is still influencing many including my film-maker friend with commitment.

And he has a new admirer – me!

“Whenever you want to achieve something, keep your eyes open, concentrate and make sure you know exactly what it is you want. No one can hit their target with their eyes closed.” ― Paulo Coelho
